Triangle-Shaped Head New Benchmark for Beauty in China?

$

In the past, we’ve reported on some of the more extreme cases of plastic surgery in China. These men and women are obsessed with beauty and are willing to go to any lengths to reach their ideal. Changing everything from the contours of their face to its features, they become completely unrecognizable from their former selves.

Among these dedicated beauty seekers is a subgroup that has been garnering a lot of attention recently: the triangle heads. Recently, we discovered another of this terrifying breed.

For both men and women in China, a round face is most common, and if you had to say, I suppose you could call this woman’s face oval-ish. But a far better description is probably her net handle: Perfect Triangle.

The user appeared on the Chinese message board tt.mop.com, where she claimed to have had plastic surgery to taper her chin. It’s not clear whether that’s true or not, but her pointy chin is certainly far from natural. The other users in China seem to find her visage just as creepy as the rest of us, though. Here are some of their comments:

-If you photoshopped this, you are pretty bad at it.
-Too angular.
-Your makeup sucks.
-That is way creepy.
-It’s some kind of monster! Earth is in peril!
-Oh… my… god!
-Alien.
-I can’t even stand looking at it.
-I’m speechless.
-How the hell did you get your face that shape?!

It doesn’t appear to be a very popular look.

The desire to be beautiful is understandable, but with this kind of extreme plastic surgery, there’s a possibility that you will actually become repellant. And if you really are shaving down the chin bone, wouldn’t you have trouble talking and eating? That’s what we want to know.

Thinking about plastic surgery? This ad may make you laugh – or it could make you think twice!

What do you think of this picture? A handsome father and pretty mother surrounded by three children who very much resemble each other all smiling in front of the camera – it looks like a happy picture of the perfect family, doesn’t it? But wait, is there something about this family that doesn’t quite look right?

Well, this picture is an ad for a plastic surgery center in Taiwan, and you can see that the children in the picture don’t look like their parents at all. The ad features the line, “The only thing you have to worry you about after plastic surgery is the explaining you’ll have to do to your children.”

Apparently, the parents in the ad have had plastic surgery, and not surprisingly, they both look extremely attractive. The nice nose-line, large eyes, fine pointed chin – it’s probably a safe bet to say that most anyone would be happy to look as good as the parents in this picture do.

But alas, plastic surgery, of course, does not change your genes, and your children would inherit the genes for the looks you were born with. Hence the children who look nothing like their parents, and the worry about explaining the truth to them.

Internet users who have seen the ad seem to think it’s quite funny, posting comments such as:

“This is a great idea for an ad!”
“I’ve never seen such a hilarious ad for plastic surgery!”
“I’m going to die laughing!”
“Of course, DNA doesn’t lie.”
“It’s bound to be hard on the children when they reach adolescence.”
“Hmm. It must be difficult for the parents to look at their children and remember their former selves.”
“I think this is already happening in Korea!”

So, the creators of this ad probably want you to think that once you have plastic surgery, you’ll have a charmed and perfect life except for the explaining you may have to do to your future children. But if you take a moment to think about it, the ad could also be interpreted as a more profound message directed to people considering plastic surgery – “Do you still want to alter your appearance, even if it means you may have to explain it later some day to your children and possibly hurt their feelings in the process?”

We have no way of knowing for sure what exact message the creators of this ad wanted to convey, but it just may be a good idea to think about the long-term consequences if you are considering plastic surgery, as with any big decisions in life.

【Follow-Up Report】“Miss Korea” Entrants’ Similar Features Not the Product of Plastic Surgery RocketNews24 3When head shots of this year’s Miss Korea entrants surfaced on the Internet, the world was shocked at how similar each girl’s features were. With the same pointed nose, slender chin, and eerily matching smile, it was easy for anyone to guess that these ladies all went to the same plastic surgeon. However, a second set of photos has surfaced, showing each girl wearing light makeup and dressed in very informal attire, confirming that this year’s Miss Korea entrants actually aren’t identical manmade clones.

As you can see, each young lady has her own set of unique features, confirming that someone on the Miss Korea Pageant staff went a little heavy on the photoshop with the first set of pictures. We aren’t sure what’s more shocking, the perception that each girl has undergone the same plastic surgery or the fact that each one was photoshopped to meet a certain standard of “beauty.”

You’d be forgiven for thinking the two girls in this photo were complete strangers, living on opposite sides of the planet. But, believe it or not, these are in fact before and after shots of the very same girl.

This Japanese model, known as Vanilla Chamu, has transformed herself through the modern miracle of plastic surgery. What did she model her new look on? Apparently her dream was to be like a ‘French porcelain doll’. Any why not? Because that’s not creepy at all…

And it hasn’t come cheap – the cost of her more than 30 procedures is estimated at over $100,000.

Despite looking so shockingly different, Vanilla’s not done yet; she’s already rumored to be planning her next set of surgeries. Will she eventually be satisfied? Or is she the next Bride of Wildenstein in the making?

“Smile Lipt” surgery promises to make you smile even if you don’t want to

Smile Lipt surgery KoreaPossibly taking a fashion cue from The Joker, women in South Korea are undergoing a bizarre plastic surgery procedure to enhance their smile. Dubbed “mouth corners lift” or “smile lipt” (a made-up word incorporating the words “lip” and “lift”), the surgery involves cutting the sides of the mouth to create the illusion of a smile.

Aone Plastic Surgery in South Korea performs the procedure, which involves plastic surgeons cutting the muscle that pulls the corners of the mouth downward. This weakens the muscle and forms a permanent smile. Regardless of how you are actually feeling, Aone suggests, “When mouth corners lift up, a smile is created” so you can have a “smiling impression without actually smiling”

According to Aone, Min-A Shin and Soo-hyun Kim have the most attractive mouth corners among Korean entertainers and it is their smile they are trying to mimic through the use of surgery.

The Smile Lipt surgery promises a perkier smile, just like the famous Korean actors above, but the difference is a little hard to imagine without seeing the before and after pictures, so let’s take a look at just a few:

See the difference?

If you’d like to go even more in-depth, Aone Plastic Surgery put together an informative video (in English) with more information than you’d ever want to know on this strange procedure.

While it might be useful to let people know you are happy even when your mouth is relaxed, we could see how having a smile all the time might get you into trouble because everyone goes through times in their life where smiling is just not appropriate. So think long and hard before getting this procedure and just know that if you do decide to go under the knife, you’ll be going through funerals, breakups, and fights with your significant other all with a slight smirk on your face.

Limb-lengthening surgery becoming increasingly popular in Korea despite inherent dangers

legs

Too fat; too tall; too hairy; too bald; can’t vend Snickers bars from our foreheads–we humans are seemingly never happy with our bodies. For many these hangups stem from a simple lack self-esteem, but over the years cosmetic surgery has grown to become a multi-million-dollar industry, with more than 15 million people choosing to have work done in 2011 alone.

We’ve shown you the horrors of plastic surgery on more than one occasion, but this latest story sends shivers down our spine. According to Japan’s Livedoor News, more young Koreans than ever are opting for costly and painful limb-lengthening surgery, despite the fact that five in six who underwent the procedure at one particular hospital met with complications, and some have lost the ability to walk entirely.

Although limb lengthening was originally developed to help those with deformities or whose arms or legs had been damaged in accidents, the newest procedure cost tens of thousands of dollars and works by inserting telescopic rods directly into the patient’s tibia and fibula. Over a series of months, the devices push the bone apart a millimetre at a time, encouraging the body to grow new bone to replace it. Are you squirming in your seat yet?

Telling prospective patients during initial consultations that they could “grow” as much as 13 centimetres (five inches) taller by having a complete course of limb-lengthening surgery, hospitals in Korea reportedly treat as many as 600 patients each year. As the surgery becomes increasingly common, however, so too do cases of former patients taking legal action after suffering unwanted side effects.

The pelvis of one 20-year-old man, Livedoor News reports, decayed completely following surgery to lengthen his legs, leaving him completely unable to walk. A man in his 30s, meanwhile, is suing his hospital as he is still unable to walk without the use of crutches more than a year later. Hardly the life he had imagined before going under the knife, we’re sure. The man also told a local newspaper that of the six people who underwent the treatment at the same hospital, five of them are currently suffering with side effects.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, you are each and every one of you free to do with your bodies as you please, but you should know that the things you’re hung up about are usually nowhere near as a big a deal to others as you may think. But if you’re considering spending vast sums of money having your bones cut into and stretched in order to be a little bit taller, be sure to do your homework and think long and hard before making your final decision.

Korea’s elementary schools witness worrying trend of do-it-yourself face-lifts

elementary face lift01

It’s no secret that South Korea has an astounding affinity for plastic surgery. While it would be unfair to suggest that the entire population is keen to go under the knife, the percentage of Koreans calling in for a nip and a tuck is literally eye-widening and jaw dropping, in addition to nose elongating and chin altering.

Unfortunately, this attitude towards altered appearances has apparently caused a curious trend in elementary school students. In an effort to appear more like the celebrities they see on TV, grade school students in South Korea are practicing something they call “self-cosmetic surgery.”

Thankfully, even though “surgery” is right there in the name, these young kids are not actually putting themselves under the knife. They are, however, turning to some pretty strenuous beauty regimes in an attempt to meet society’s surgically-achieved beauty standards.

Methods include double-eyelid trainer glasses and the nose straightener, modeled here by our very own Mr. Sato, as well as sort of chin mold, made to “correct” the contours of one’s face. All of the children making use of these various apparatuses appear to be under the impression that the younger they are able to get plastic surgery the better. It’s just that their parents won’t allow it.

Specialists in the field of child development disagree with this attitude. One specifically warns against the use of these so-called beauty products, saying that strong external stressors can badly influence the children’s physical growth. If only it were so easy to explain this logic to a 10-year-old whose most immediately perceived stressors are the opinions of his or her peers.

Chinese man loses his nose in an accident, has new one artificially grown on his forehead

nose

For those who have lost a part of their body either through illness or after being involved in an accident, plastic surgery offers not only the hope of repairing any physical damage but also restoring self-confidence. One phenomenal case of life-altering plastic surgery currently receiving a lot of attention here in Asia is that of a surgeon in China who is growing a replacement nose on the forehead of a man who lost his during traffic accident.

The restoration process involves cultivating a new nose on the patient’s forehead and then transplanting it onto the area where the old nose once was. The man’s new nose has been grown to include all the features that you would normally expect, from the nostrils and nasal bridge to the mucous membrane inside the nose itself.

The man, from Quanzhou, Fujian province, is believed to have been quite the looker prior to his tragic road accident, and elected to have the new nose grown on his forehead so that it would appear as natural as possible and help restore him to his former handsome glory.

  • Conventional plastic surgery just wasn’t an option

After reviewing the man’s case, conventional plastic surgery was deemed out of the question due to the severity of the damage. The man’s surgeon suggested that a completely new nose be cultivated on his forehead and transplanted when it had fully grown. After losing his nose, the man had become prone to allergies and even suffered from asthma. He was also struggling to come to terms with his new physical appearance, and had even developed hyperventilation syndrome. This was the first time the man had heard of such a procedure but, putting his trust in the surgeon, he decided to take the plunge.

  • The steps involved

1.) First an area of skin on the man’s forehead was stretched.

2.) Next, the cartilage that would form the structure of the nose was transplanted onto his forehead. In this case, cartilage from one of the man’s ribs was used.

3.) Next, an artificial membrane, complete with its own blood supply, was transplanted onto the area. Both nostrils were then opened.

nose6

Reaching the end of stage three took a total of nine months and the man is currently in the final stages of surgery wherein his new nose will be made more aesthetically pleasing and finally transplanted from the forehead and onto where it belongs. At the present time, despite looking in every way identical to a normal nose, the newly grown sniffer is firmly attached to the man’s forehead and serves no anatomical purpose. The patient wears a hat and mask when going anywhere in public but admits, “I can’t wait for the day when I can do away with the mask and breathe normally.”

If everything goes according to plan, that day might just be around the corner! Cultivating cells from the body in this way reduces the possibility of the patient’s body rejecting the transplanted tissue, but to cultivate a nose on your forehead clearly requires not just the body to support it but also quite the mental resolve.

Below is an illustration of the steps involved, with the fourth and final step being the reconstruction of the cultivated nose.

nose5

There’s only a little way to go before the surgery is complete, and we here at RocketNews24 hope that the final stages go smoothly!

Beware of cost-cutting cosmetic surgery! Young Chinese woman pays a steep price for a cheap fix

$

As modern techniques get more advanced, cosmetic surgery, which promises to fulfill the desire to be beautiful, is increasingly accessible at more reasonable prices. You can even go home the same day. Some who wish to go under the knife or needle elect to travel to countries like South Korea, where plastic surgery is highly advanced and it costs much less than having it done at home.

Of course, selecting a plastic surgeon based on their price alone is a recipe for a horrible surprise when the bandages are removed. Sadly, one young Chinese woman had a minor procedure botched at 17, and now in her twenties could be mistaken for a woman in her sixties or seventies.

・Deciding to get cosmetic surgery as a 17-year-old

The woman in the photo, who appears decades older than her actual age, is Xiaolian of Guangdong Province, China. Xiaolian had always hated the thinness of her face. On top of that, her boss at the shop where she worked part-time allegedly told her “your face is so thin, you look like a pauper”.

Ah, these different ideals of beauty. Isn’t the grass always greener? If I could have switched my plump cheeks for a thin face with razor-sharp cheekbones, I would have done it in a heartbeat. And then probably wanted to switch it back again. After years of diligently sunning and applying fake tan to my naturally pasty-white skin, I arrived in Japan and was dazzled by the strangeness of this reverso-world: a dizzying array of skin whitening products greeted me at every convenience store. Can’t we appreciate what we have—the individuality that makes each of us unique and special? Well, I guess spending wads of cash to obviously alter one’s appearance and achieve a cherished social ideal bestows a special kind of status in itself.

To get rid of her complex, Xiaolian decided to undergo a procedure to plump up her face. But when she made enquiries at a clinic, the cost quoted was considerable. It wasn’t a price that she could afford to pay.

・Can’t afford it? Go to a cut-price clinic instead—problem solved??

After this initial disappointment, a friend referred Xiaolian to a different clinic, which promised to perform the same procedure for a much more affordable price. The price was right, and the doctor seemed legit, so she decided to go ahead with it. The injections to her face gave her the plump cheeks she had always wished for.

・Years later, her face began to swell

However, in 2009, some years after having this treatment, Xiaolian’s face began to swell up. Her eyes, nose and other features were changing shape. By 2013, her face had become even more swollen, and her hair started to fall out. It’s hard to believe that she is still in her twenties—she now has the face of a much older woman.

・The substance injected into her face was toxic

Understandably, Xiaolian was extremely traumatized by her drastically-altered looks. She said that she considered suicide. Wondering if she was suffering from some kind of serious illness, she had a thorough medical checkup, but nothing was found to be abnormal. Her thoughts turned to the minor procedure she’d had when she was just 17—could that be the cause?

Investigating the matter, she discovered that the substance injected into her face was hydrophilic polyacrylamide gel. Previously used for breast augmentation, its sale was now banned in China due to the harm it caused to the body.

・Doctor: “Even for a minor procedure, choose a clinic you can trust”

Xiaolian is currently undergoing facial rehabilitation at a cosmetic surgery centre in Guangzhou. As the gel was in her body for a long period of time, she has been seriously affected by it and recovery is difficult.

In her case, a gel was used which has since been banned, but in other cases substances have been used which haven’t been approved at all. It’s also very difficult for patients to judge whether the treatment delivered in cosmetic procedures is the genuine article. A doctor from the Guangzhou centre warns that “even for a minor procedure, you need to choose a clinic you can trust”.

▼ Xiaolian, before her face swelled up

Personally, I would prefer to take my chances with my natural face, and steer well clear of any scalpels or chemicals in the vicinity. But who knows, in the future the technology may advance to the point where I’d be silly not to get Angelina’s lips or Kim’s booty. If so, I’m prepared to eat my words!

Korean woman goes under the knife 120 times in pursuit of perfection

koreasurgery1

We’ve already covered South Korea’s attitudes about plastic surgery; basically, that it’s considered at worst a necessary evil for some folks to get ahead in life.

That cultural attitude has led the country to be widely considered the world cosmetic surgery capital, and has even led a handful, like this obsessed woman, to spend years of their lives and hundreds of thousands of dollars artificially perfecting their appearance.

We’re not sure who the woman is, but we hope we’re not out of line when we say that, before all the surgery, she wasn’t exactly a looker. Still, the jury is out on whether looking like your face is made out of candle wax is a worthy trade-off.

ScreenHunter_160 Dec. 18 18.00

Korean speakers, feel free to give your input in the comments section, but the video below appears to show a male model judging the woman’s appearance at various stages of the seven years of cosmetic surgery she underwent:

In the next video, we see a snippet of the woman’s personal story and see her visiting a surgeon for a touch-up. We can’t overlook the fact that the surgeons in these types of stories never appear to have had any surgery themselves, which is kind of like a shady supplement salesman refusing to take his own product for fear it might kill him.

Whatever your opinion on plastic surgery, it’s clear there’s a thin line between it being moderately beneficial and turning you into an uncanny valley video game character come to life.

Beauty is pain: A journey through one South Korean woman’s plastic surgery 【Photos】

2013.12.21 SK plastic surgery 1

If you have been paying attention to South Korean pop culture, then you are probably already aware of the huge popularity of plastic surgery as evident by some startling before-and-after images. Plastic surgery is fast becoming as Korean as kimchi, soju or Samsung as one in five women there admit to going under the knife in the name of beauty.

But while seeing before-and-after images demonstrate a surgeon’s skill, you may not be seeing the long and probably very painful process that goes on in between the two pictures. A Korean woman recently posted the many stages of her recovery after plastic surgery, which provides a much-needed context about the lengths people go for the sake of beauty. Click below to see how she looked while her body healed from the procedure!

Whatever her motivation for getting a little work done, the following images show you how much some people are dedicated to improving their bodies through surgery. Just to let you know, a few of the pictures taken right after the plastic surgery may be a little hard for some of you more sensitive souls to look at, but they are probably tamer than anything you see on a TV medical drama.

So before we go any further, here is what this woman looked like before the surgery.

2013.12.21 SK plastic surgery 2

The next set of pictures shows the doctors prepping her for surgery.

2013.12.21 SK plastic surgery 3

Soon after the procedure, the top left photo was taken. Then the top right picture was taken two days later. And in the bottom image, we see her with the bandages taken off five days after the surgery. The swelling had gone down a lot in just five days, but it is still quite noticeable.

2013.12.21 SK plastic surgery 4

These pictures show (from top left to right) her recovery seven days later, 10 days later and in the bottom frame, two weeks after the surgery. The swelling is going down a lot and you can begin to see the surgeon’s “artwork” shining through.

2013.12.21 SK plastic surgery 5

These four photos show her about one month after the surgery. The swelling is pretty much gone and she is starting to look like a whole other person.

2013.12.21 SK plastic surgery 6

And these five photos were taken six months after the surgery and shows how her face has taken the shape of what seems to be a completely new woman.

2013.12.21 SK plastic surgery 7

Taken well after her surgery, these pictures show how dramatically changed this woman is now. She barely resembles the person who walked into the operation room.

2013.12.21 SK plastic surgery 1

Here is her new profile thanks to the weeks and maybe months of pain.

2013.12.21 SK plastic surgery 8

Of course, South Korea is hardly the only country where people go through extreme procedures to look a certain way. What do you think of the overwhelming trend of plastic surgery in some countries? Is it worth the costs, both physical and financial, to feel better about your new “fixed” body? Let us know if this look into the recovery from plastic surgery has changed the way you think about these kinds of procedures!

Busted on national TV! South Korean celebrity’s CT scan reveals she had plastic surgery

$

p1

All woman want to feel beautiful, and as we’ve seen before a surprising number of women in Asia are willing to go the extra mile in their quest to achieve physical beauty by turning to cosmetic surgery. Once achieved, few of them would be willing to admit to having gone under the knife, but last week the truth about one female South Korean celebrity’s plastic surgery was exposed on national television. Seemingly by accident. Uh-oh…

  • Plastic surgery unintentionally exposed on TV

The unfortunate victim was popular comedian Ms. So-young Park. Ms. Park appeared on KBS2TV’s variety show Vitamin on the episode which was broadcast on January 8. The show focuses on topics related to health, and the theme for this episode was “a beautiful figure.” Singers and other celebrities also joined her on the show. X-rays and CT scans taken of each of them were revealed as part of the program, and a specialist explained the contents of them.

  • Something that shouldn’t be there!

However, a mysterious object appeared inside the image of Ms. Park’s CT head scan! A light brown pole-shaped object was clearly visible along the bridge of her nose, but it was definitely not bone or cartilage. When everyone asked what it was, even Ms. Park stared at the image in confusion. Then the specialist remarked, “Plastic surgery can’t trick the CT scan. You must have a silicone implant there,” disclosing the truth of Ms. Park’s nose-job. It was an unexpected development for plastic surgery to be revealed on a health-focused show, and Ms. Park also appeared to hide her face in embarrassment.

  • Exposing all of the secrets

Since her secret was exposed in the CT scan, there was no point in hiding anything else. Ms. Park confessed to a tummy tuck and other past surgeries that she had undergone. And it sure wasn’t cheap: 1,200,000  won for her eyes (about US$1,129), 3,500,000 won for her nose ($3,293), and additional expensive lip procedures. She stated that corrective tooth surgery alone cost over 10,000,000 won ($9,410). In other words, the total amount of money she has spent on plastic surgery up until now is the equivalent of a pretty decent car.

  • Prevalence of plastic surgery in South Korea

It is said that one in five South Korean women have had some form of plastic surgery. This figure confirms South Korea’s appropriate title “the plastic surgery capital.” Although the ratio of women who have had plastic surgery is high, individuals do not generally publicize it. The way Ms. Park’s surgery was revealed to the general public was especially embarrassing…but as comedian, hopefully she can recover and use the experience to her advantage!

Plastic surgery clinic in Seoul makes art out of patients’ jaw bones

Jawbone art

You like sausage, right? Of course you do. But no one ever wants to see how the sausage is made. So why did this plastic surgery clinic in Seoul think it was a good idea to display two towering columns filled with the jaw bones of their past patients? It’s enough to make you rethink your pursuit of the perfect chin.

Like some twisted scene out of Saw or even your run of the mill bone graveyard, the remnants of approximately 1,000 people stand piled high at a clinic in the swanky Gangnam district of Seoul (yes, the same Gangnam from the horse-riding tuxedo-wearing Psy). If the “art piece” is anything to go by, business is doing well. If it’s hard for you to imagine why this plastic surgeon came to own so many jaw bones, here’s some before and after shots of Korean women who had chin surgery:

Get the idea? The bone tower photo was posted on the clinic’s homepage and horrified people around the world. It has since been taken down following a government order to dispose of the installation and an investigation into the clinic’s medical practices. The clinic could face fines for the improper disposal of body parts because, you know, they didn’t dispose of them at all.

Now who wants some barbecue ribs? I’m starving!

Beautiful South Korean reporter ruins her face with plastic surgery

Take a look at that beautiful woman in the “before” picture. She certainly has the whole package (assuming her personality matches her looks). But when the “after” photo of her post-plastic surgery face showed up on a Japanese forum, it caused cute girl aficionados across the nation to cry out in horror. After seeing the photos ourselves, we can’t help but feel that this absolutely beautiful woman ruined her face and would go as far as saying that the surgery was a waste of a perfectly attractive female.

Screen Shot 2014-01-28 at 6.12.36 AM

There are few details about the photos, but we do know the woman is a reporter in South Korea. When an estimated 1 in 5 South Koreans go under the knife, it’s not uncommon to see photos depicting the sculptability of the human face, but we can’t see why this particular woman decided to change her looks in such a drastic way. Let’s take a look at some other photos of this woman before her surgery:

And now for the after shots:

Japanese netizens were horrified:

“Someone please tell me this was Photoshopped!”

“Why did she do that?!”

“There’s no end to the desires of humans.”

“Is it really possible to taper someone’s chin that much?”

“She really doesn’t know what true beauty is.”

“It looks like you could plow a field with that chin.”

“Is that girl satisfied with her face? I really want to know.”

Despite what these netizens think, we suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this young lady could be more confident and happy with the way she looks now that she’s undergone plastic surgery. However, it seems most people agree that she got too much of her jaw bone shaved off. We just hope it didn’t land up on display in her plastic surgeon’s office.

Are these 10 naturally beautiful Korean stars too gorgeous to be real?

cover 2

So, you’ve probably heard that cosmetic surgery is common in South Korea. Considering its popularity, it’s hard to deny that going under the knife seems fundamentally appealing to a large group of people. And, hey, if you’re happy, we’re happy, right?

But cosmetic surgery has become so popular in South Korea that a few articles about “top ten natural Korean beauties” have recently become a hot topic in Taiwanese media, drawing the attention of microblogging Internet commenters. Unfortunately, it looks like the commenters weren’t ready to accept the women’s untouched beauty. Check out how heated the discussion got below!

cover 1

Earlier this week, a couple articles proclaiming the “Ten Korean Beauties with Zero Cosmetic Surgery” started circulating in the Taiwanese media, getting picked up by numerous microbloggers. The articles described the women as being both beautiful and confirmed free of any cosmetic surgery, the former of which anyone can be confirmed with a few glances.

But zero surgery? Well, that would be a bit more difficult to prove–or, in the case of Chinese and Taiwanese microbloggers, believe! Shortly after the articles appeared online, commenters flooded the Internet with their (largely negative) take on the articles.

“Victoria [Song] is Chinese!” Numerous Chinese commenters pointed out. Which, it seems, is completely true. So, maybe a better title for the original articles should have been: “Nine Korean (and one Chinese) Beauties with Zero Cosmetic Surgery.” Not very catchy, but at least it’s accurate…

▼ Victoria Song, a member of f(x), was born in the Shandong Province of China.

In addition to making national claims on Victoria, commenters also began to throw baseless accusations like: “There are no natural Korean women!” and “So, any Korean woman not on this list has had cosmetic surgery?” One peculiar comment really caught our attention. The microblogger wrote, “if you want to see what a real Korean face looks like, go to North Korea!”

However there were slings and arrows not yet flung. One commenter later added, “What Korean people call ‘natural’ includes any surgery that doesn’t use a scalpel.” To which we can only reply, what the hell are you smoking, man??

Another blogger went after Gong Hyou-jin, saying of the actress: “She’s not just beautiful–her features are very natural-looking. But her face is different from what it used to be!” Well, she might have gotten surgery–or she might have just aged a few years!

▼Gong Hyo-jin

Coming to the defense of the supposedly natural women, a large contingent of male bloggers responded by writing: “Who cares if women have had surgery or not. As long as they’ll go out with us, we’re happy!”

Finally, some microbloggers pointed to two Japanese stars–Yui Aragaki and Maki Horikita–saying, “This is natural! The Koreans are fakes!” We’re starting to think these commenters are just grumpy folks who need a Snickers bar and a long nap.

Regardless, they are all beautiful women, and we really don’t care if they’ve had any cosmetic surgery done or not. They’re still glamorous pop stars, right? Right!

Now, check out the remaining eight women below and enjoy your weekend!

Woman has plastic surgery to evade police, arouses suspicion with new appearance, gets arrested

Screen Shot 2014-03-12 at 17.48.36

Some people will always end up regretting having plastic surgery, but perhaps none more so than this woman, whose cosmetic surgery ended up getting her arrested. The fugitive tried to evade Chinese police by having her face remodelled – but the plan backfired when her new appearance aroused suspicion at airport security, and she was taken into custody.

The 21-year-old, who has been wanted on charges of blackmail since 2012, was arrested at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport at the end of February. Airport officials said they first became suspicious because the woman did not look like the photo ID she was using as she made the journey to visit her alleged accomplice in custody.

It’s alleged that the woman, who is from Xianyang, Shaanxi, worked together with two men to blackmail another man out of 39,700 yuan (US$6,462) in November 2012. The case involved a so-called “badger game“, in which a male victim is tricked into some kind of compromising position, evidence of which is then used as blackmail.

▼ The only happy thing about this story, really, is that no badgers were harmed.

badger1

When they heard that the police were looking for them, the three split up, and the woman laid low in nearby Xi’an, where she seems to have worked odd jobs for a while before hitting on the idea of changing her appearance to avoid capture.

In December, after undergoing cosmetic surgery on her nose and eyes, the woman realised that she now looked rather a lot like her cousin. Hearing that her accomplice had been arrested, she had another bright idea – go and visit her arrested friend, using her cousin’s identity papers!

▼ The unnamed suspect, before and after surgery.

Screen Shot 2014-03-12 at 15.55.26

She hadn’t counted on the eagle-eyed staff at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, however. Despite the woman having had her nose and eyes reshaped, the staff at passport control realised that her ears didn’t match the photo (which begs the question, what kind of amazingly distinctive ears does her cousin have?). When questioned, the woman confessed and was quickly arrested.

So what conclusions can we draw from this sorry tale? Don’t have plastic surgery to avoid the police – or if you do, at least make sure you pick the right body part to change.

▼ Van Gogh knew a bit about ear-related regret, too.

Man spends $140,000 a month on cosmetic surgery, girls still aren’t impressed

Screen Shot 2014-03-21 at 11.04.19 AM

Imagine dropping vast sums of cash on plastic surgery in an effort to make yourself appear more attractive, only to be told by a host of female celebs on national television that they wouldn’t touch you with a barge pole.

In classic Japanese variety show fashion, that’s precisely what TBS’s Watashi no Nani ga Ikenai no!? has in store for viewers next week, according to a recently released teaser trailer.

Naniike, as it’s known by TV lovers, isn’t actually due to air until 7 p.m. next Monday, and no doubt some of the female guests’ reactions to this young man’s heavily altered face are being exaggerated for entertainment’s sake, but already the scheduled broadcast is making waves online in Japan.

The man reportedly spent just over US$140,00 in a single month on cosmetic surgery to change his face from (what we think is) a perfectly normal one to one that’s, well, a bit creepy. Maybe it’s just the colour contacts and tinted eyelashes giving us the willies?

The thing is, the female tarento on the show seem to find his new face entirely unattractive, saying that there’s “no way” they’d go for him, and that he’s “not cool in the slightest”.

Truth be told, we’re not overly impressed with Japanese television, so it remains to be seen if this is all mouth and no trousers, as we say in the UK, but if you like a bit of drama and hyperbole in your TV viewing, you might want to keep an eye out for this one.

surgeryheader

I’m not going to lie, I love transformation shows – home improvement, weight loss, makeovers, you name it. But plastic surgery shows are one of those that I keep on the down low, even more of a guilty pleasure than the others. They make the changes their participants go through seem like a piece of cake, often skipping over the majority of the long and painful process with snazzy montages and cut scenes.

Opinions are divided on plastic surgery, but whether you’re pro or anti-scalpel, you can’t fail to be amazed by some of the almost magical work these surgeons can perform. And of course some of the most dramatic changes are coming out of South Korea, one of the world’s hotspots for plastic surgery. Check out these photos; we promise we won’t tell anyone you did.

Today’s ‘success story’ comes courtesy of a Korean variety show, which reported on a woman whose husband had got fed up of her plain features and sun spots and had filed for divorce. Feeling like it was her only option, the woman put herself forward for a plastic surgery reality TV show, and was ‘fortunate’ enough to be chosen. What followed was the typical ugly duckling to beautiful swan transformation, leaving her so completely remodeled that even her own son couldn’t recognize her. Afterwards she met with her husband, who upon seeing her immediately backtracked on his divorce plans, promising he’d never mention it again. Happily ever after? So we’re meant to believe. This is apparently a success story, the moral seemingly something along the lines of ’get plastic surgery to make people like you’. However I like to imagine that after the cameras stopped rolling she surprised hubby with divorce papers of her own, hopefully accompanied by a male model on each arm, a wind machine, and some kind of uplifting 80s music.

▼ Here’s the lady in question – you can’t deny that she now bears little resemblance to her previous self.

surgery01

▼ And now for some more incredible photos from the millions of Korean women who’ve undergone plastic surgery.

surgery02 surgery03 surgery09 surgery08

▼ A ‘small face’ is a benchmark for beauty in South Korea, and there are plenty of surgeons specializing in ‘jaw shaving’ procedures to get a round or square face down to that desirable pointy triangle.

surgery04 surgery10 surgery05 surgery07

If you’re getting work done yourself remember to always go with a reputable surgeon, and do a bit more research than just bringing them a cut-out triangle and saying ‘make my face like that!’.

Japanese adult video star’s dramatic plastic surgery sets internet abuzz

$

There has been a lot of talk online in Japan recently about Rina Nanase. Known as Rumi Kanda in her adult video days, the young model has been surprisingly open about turning to plastic surgery to change the shape of her face.

In a process that she began chronicling via Twitter late last year, Nanase has made a number of changes to her eyes, nose, and chin. Now that she has shared photos of her “finished” look, however, many are calling it “way too much,” with some even suggesting that she now resembles the character Dobby from the Harry Potter movies.

First is a picture of Nanase taken when she was just 17. As cute and healthy as she looks here, Nanase describes this young woman as a “different person” and criticizes her “fat” nose and “beady eyes.”

The model then shared another photo, looking back at what she considers her “idol era prime.”

The photos were shared as she was undergoing a nose lengthening procedure that resulted in the following image. Nanase says that she didn’t feel it was a particularly big change, but was surprised at the reaction she got from other people.

The following month, she had her eyes done during a week of downtime. But when she awoke from the procedure she was shocked at what she saw, calling the result a “failure” and a “grotesque disaster.” It appears the bags under her eyes had swollen to an extreme size.

Even by December of last year, she still had large lumps beneath her eyes. She wrote that she was feeling too self-conscious to even take a walk outside, but endured until the new year when she had them corrected.

It was a picture that she tweeted earlier this month that has garnered so much attention online, however.

To be fair, Nanase had been complaining of severe nausea earlier this month that resulted in weight loss. During this time she had posted several other photos of herself looking slightly healthier, but still with a noticeably sharper chin than she had before.

Netizens in Japan had a lot to say about Nanase’s new look, but as you might expect very little of it was positive.

“She looks like a character from a Nobuyuki Fukumoto manga.”

“Like an alien.”

“The person before the surgery was very nice…”

“Does she have an eating disorder?”

“There are a lot of adult video actresses with mental health issues.”

“She looked pretty good until last August…”

“That’s beyond acceptable.”

People clearly aren’t very welcoming to Rina Nanase’s recent changes, but nevertheless the model herself seems quite upbeat in her tweets and appears to be satisfied with the end results.

Does she, as some have suspected, have an eating disorder? She doesn’t seem to. Is she mentally ill? Perhaps. But  at the end of the day, if Rina Nanase is finally happy with the way she looks then who are we to judge?

Personally I don’t think she looks nearly as bad as everyone says. Then again, maybe I’ve worked here too long.
